Anime Expo Pop Up Shop: Designer Spotlight

June 9, 2012

La Petite Deer

Anime Expo is here in three weeks! And, our second Designer Spotlight Series is underway. This week, we're featuring La Petite Deer, a sister duo that makes the cutest, most adorable hair accessories! Read up on their whimsical and vintage inspired line and their favorite Hayao Miyuzaki films (kudos to them for such good taste).

About La Petite Deer

Unable to find hair clips that were different and unique for Mari's then two year old daughter Chloe, Mari teamed with her sister Erica to find some fun supplies that could be used to make cute, classic hair clips with a fresh update. Their first purchase of supplies came together to create their signature and best selling snap clips.

Their customers appreciate that each item is unique, so now they have extended this design concept to a full line of hair accessories, jewelry and gift items to provide customers a fun collection to choose from that reflects the sister's own unique personalities.

Products they Make
Headbands, Snap clips, Hair Bows, Jewelry, Sewn Pencil Pouches, and Magnets

And the winner is ...

Favorite Movies

An obvious favorite, but we love Hayao Miyazaki's films. We find that we just love the classic themes in his stories yet we appreciate that they always have fun twists. Erica's favorite Miyazaki film is "Howl's Moving Castle" and Mari's is "Kiki's Delivery Service."

Describe the first time you sold one of your handmade goods online: what was the item, how did the frenzy and excitement feel?

The first time we sold our handmade snap clips online sent us into a major frenzy of "OMGs!" and smiles from ear to ear! The feeling lasted for several days actually. Our first sale was of two of our signature snap clips, both Hello Kitty in theme, to a mother in Chicago who planned to give them to her daughter for her third birthday. We were even more thrilled to not only receive great feedback on the quality of the clips but also that her daughter loves wearing the clips.

Wrap Up

The brand's creators love all things classically girly - bows, cute characters, beautiful colors! They are influenced by the Kawaii and Lolita styles in Japanese pop culture. La Petite Deer is also informed by the richly ornate yet classic stylings found in French art, history and culture. One of their favorite inspirations is Marie Antoinette and you can see the French influence in their signature Crest Style Hair Clips.

La Petite Deer is the combination and juxtaposition of these two influences, where they make classic fun!

Support these two lovable sisters by purchasing their creations online or visit them at one of their regular pop up shop locations like Jones Coffee Roasters in Pasadena. Read more about this year's AX Pop up Shop and check out the rest of our kawaii inspired designers here.
